If you're in the US or Israel and you want to send a Jewish gift to family in Europe — for a wedding in Antwerp, a Bar Mitzvah in Paris, a housewarming in Manchester or just because — there's a lot to get right. Here's the honest guide.

What ships well to Europe

Not all Judaica is built for international shipping. The pieces that travel best:

  • Framed prints and canvas wall art — flat, light, well-protected. Ship in a tube or flat-pack box.
  • Glass challah boards — yes, they survive the trip with proper packaging. Ours arrive intact 99%+ of the time.

What doesn't travel well: very large fragile items (oversized framed glass), hand-painted ceramics without museum-grade packaging, and anything food-related (customs nightmare).

Shipping times and costs

Most international tracked courier orders to Europe arrive in 7–14 business days. Add 3–5 days if the piece is personalized and needs production time.

Shipping costs to Europe typically run $25–60 depending on size, weight and destination country. Western European countries (UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland) tend to be on the lower end; smaller / more remote destinations on the higher end.

Customs and VAT — what your family will actually pay

This is the part most people get wrong. Even though you pay for shipping at checkout, your family may be asked to pay local VAT and a small handling fee when the courier delivers. The amount depends on:

  • The destination country — VAT rates range from ~17% (Luxembourg) to ~27% (Hungary).
  • The declared value of the item. Many countries have a small de-minimis threshold (e.g., the UK is £135) below which no VAT is collected on delivery.
  • Whether the item is marked as a gift. This sometimes (not always) reduces or removes the VAT.

For a typical $80–200 personalized Judaica gift, expect 10–25% added on delivery in most European countries. Build that into your gift budget so your family isn't surprised.

Timing — when to order

  • Wedding or Bar Mitzvah: order at least 4 weeks before the event. That gives you a buffer for production, shipping and customs clearance.
  • Housewarming or birthday: 3 weeks is comfortable.
  • Hanukkah or Passover gift: order 4–5 weeks before — high season is slow at customs.
